A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4661 AS INTRODUCED 4-24-01
The Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act recognizes and declares as a civil right the "opportunity to obtain employment, housing and other real estate, and the full and equal utilization of public accommodations, public service, and education facilities without discrimination because of religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status, or marital status" as prohibited by the act. The act generally prohibits discrimination in these areas if the discrimination is based upon religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status, or marital status. The bill would amend the act to define and include sexual orientation as a category protected under the act.
The bill would define "sexual orientation" to mean having an orientation for heterosexuality, homosexuality, or bisexuality, having a history of such an orientation, or being identified with such an orientation.
